oh well, I realised ive been blogging for A year + a half.
Heya. back here again. well, you must be wondering why it took me so long before i did another entry up. well, as you can see, the previous entry was like an article-long one. I was giving other people to finish reading 'em! haha well, so much excuses for my laziness. Okay, to speak the truth, I was a little busy recent days, with a little more laziness on my mind, and a little more effort on playing my games = less blog entries. crap. sorry. my friends all say i feel more crappy ever since i came back from Vietnam. i dont know? haha.
Okay, here's a little update on school. Has been bad. i dont understand what the lecturers are teaching. and there's this particular module. oh the lecturer practically isnt that great. i dont know i dont like him. lol.
Had chalets, BBQs, and buffet outings throughout the month. mostly on gatherings with my sec and pri sch mates. well, life is spinning real fast right now. time is like running out. some of my friends are already in NS. wow. couldnt believe how time flies past. Anyways, had buffet at Sakae today. was great, in some sense. and alright, didnt really force the food into my mouth. i had my limits hehe. seriously, I received the CD compilation of pictures and VCD of the YEP trip. cool. Zhiming did a great job. All of a sudden, it came to a point where I felt I still miss the people there. although not that much. I was starting to realise, if our bonds, friends and relationships that we've made there, could just fade over time.
I dont know how long Ive been blogging actually. because it seems like its been a long time that Ive kept my blog alive but i guess no one really knows my add cos I'd rather keep it to people that Im rather close to. well, those that arent close probably wouldnt even bother entering the site. heh. Aiya, in a nutshell, Life really sucks this year. Let's move on anticipating for a better 2005 will ya ya ya ya and ya ? Vrooom. Merry christmas eve people. I'd just hope to celebrate this christmas with me myself and I. hehe.. eve, I'll leave it to you guys man !

28.11.04

For me, time seems to be flyin' past this holiday. The last time I've written on my blog was 5/11/2004. I've been there and back from Vietnam, and you know what? I've never regretted once for making that decision.

The Trip There

The morning of 8/11/2004, I couldn't get myself to sleep. I was tossing and turning on my bed, not knowing what would happen over there, and even in Singapore when I leave. I was worried, yet excited. Eventually, I managed a catnap. Soon, 5am reached. I was awakened by 3 handphones and a couple of morning calls from my friends. In a blink of an eye, I was already on the airplane, heading to Hanoi, Vietnam. The three and a half hour flight was a short yet long journey.

Arrival at Hanoi, Vietnam

We were greeted by a tour guide and a lady in their, I suppose, traditional costume. We went over to a restaurant to have lunch, it wasn't filling at all! Never mind. Probably because I couldn't take seafood that's why to me it wasn't filling. After that, we headed to Hoa Sua School.
Upon arrival at Hoa Sua School, I was quite surprised because I was expecting a much lower standard of living over there. I was wrong. While we were getting our luggage bags unloaded, there were people waving at us over at the other block. I waved back.

Bunk
My bunkmates consisted of Wai Kit, Eric, Calvin, Effendi, Binghong, Wee and me. All 7 of us, on a 6 bed-ed room. That means one of us have to sleep on the floor. We had our rotary system extended over a period of 14 days. But the system sort of failed at the last 4 /14 days, because our facillitator, Mr. Chong, bought us mattress to sleep on.

At First...
The first 2 days at Hoa Sua School was slack, we didn't do much except for interacting with the people there. We got to know quite a few people at first. They were so warm-hearted. So friendly. We were allowed 2 days to get adjusted with the life there. The first night we slept, no one knew how it was to be. I had totally no protection against the mosquitoes in the sense that I slept with shorts and T-shirt. The next day I woke up having bitten by the mosquitoes and suffered the night through due to the cold weather. Obviously we grew smarter the next night. There were 2-3 days when the nights were Extremely Coldddd.......
On our second night, we were all ready with what we are here in the first place. We were briefed by our SLs and got everything that's needed done with. My first task was the documentation of recipes at the bakery and pastries. My other friends went on into Asian Cooking, European Cooking, whereas some went into their classes and some of them went to the Hydroponics.

Blending into the Hoa Sua Life...
Week1[
Third day, we went on into the bakery. We met the chef who could speak french, Mr. Trung. He's a very friendly guy who's really skillful in decorating the cakes and stuffs. we learnt how to make tarts and also got to taste their very nice cakes. There was another girl we met called Van. She could really speak English better than anyone else inside the bakery. She's really good at cracking jokes too. Well, at least we could feel her little sarcasms here and there.
But there's one girl I would particularly like to mention is this girl, Nguyen Thi Ngân. She's really the one that has made leaving Vietnam such a hard thing to do. She's to me a very special girl. I could say that she's a girl that's really keen on learning English better just to communicate better with us. Well, but I didn't know why she was there at the bakery because she's supposed to be an Asian Cooking student.
Well, the rest of the days were more of dealing with the different documentations of recipes and stuffs of various food that were done over there.. and it was like quite alot. We were also supposed to sound like critics in magazines to write great stuffs about the dishes, it was tough, but we had a great laugh afterall.
On weekends, school's not really teaching. We had outings, well.. the first day we went all over Hanoi's places of interest(they weren't that interesting though). My first Dong spent was on a Cornetto's Ice cream I can still remember vividly because there's nothing much we could buy over there at Vietnam. We visited the musuem, which, sells very nice chopsticks and stuffs. But I didn't buy it anyway. Because I was wary about the amount of money I brought over to Vietnam. So I spent with care. Anyway, Lunch came. We went to this restaurant that really serves very very delicious foods. It's called Minh Anh, if i remember correctly. Next, I think we went over to army museums and stuffs.. wasn't that interesting. After that, we went back over to school and made use of this time to interact with the people there. They were extremely friendly. And also not forgetting our soccer khakis in Vietnam.. where we played by the roadside with occasional motorcycles passing by the roads, and so we have to stop once in a while to allow all the traffic to return back to normal before we resumed playing. At nights, we often gather together with Ying Ying and Sylvia in our Bunks to have a few game of Poker and also to chat and crap, well, not to forget our bunk's jokes and the disposable undies WK was wearing.. And so 7 days passed by like that.. of course there were many other incidents that I couldn't really recall because too many things happened.. but I'm trying to remember as much as possible. heh...should have written a diary like what Sylvia did. Argh. But anyway, all is over now.

Week 2[
Handover of projects, means that I've finish documenting dishes for my part.. Now next, the Miscellaneous Group. This group was initally proposed to be the ones washing wishes and clothings and stuffs for us but it was abolished later on. So we went into their table serving classes and see how the teachers actually teach the students. Of course, we too helped out abit with the teaching.. in the sense that in table service classes, we actually helped the students rehearse what they have to do in real life at the restaurants. Yep, was fun and also quite nervous because afterall, this is our first time doing it and we have to show that we are doing it for alot of times and that we're supposed to be more experienced because we have a better command of English. I can't really remember how it went during these days, but I remember there was one day where we all gathered with some vietnamese over at their bunk to have a little chat with them and also some singing.. which was.. totally unforgettable.. because they were all so so friendly. Well, I'm starting to miss them the moment I'm typing this.. heh.
Handover of projects, this time I'm dealing with the Hydroponics. Which means my last project before we call it an end to Vietnam's YEP and head off to RNR. I've learnt how to drill stuffs using electronic drills. Yeah, we were helping them do that replacing of new roofs. It sounded like very tough in the beginning. But in fact, it's really very tough! But I guess I'm still up to the job because at the end of it all, I was the one drilling the roofs. It was really cool, but tiring job to do. Of course, we changed the nettings as well. we all had the nettings changed.. And the whole thing looks so new after we changed the stuffs and we really felt that we have done much of the stuffs really well. It was cool, absolutely. We really had a little rush for time to finish the netting part because we had lots of problems along the way and we had to solve it within one night. It was tedious, but we overcame it, on a very positive note. I remember when I was doing my hydroponics project, I opted to visit Hoa Sua Restaurants aka Ha Hoi on one of my days. It was truely an eye opener, and also I made quite a few friends over there. One of them was Muoi, another girl I cannot forget. She was with us at the restaurant as Hostess, and the funny part was that she's so soft spoken that she doesn't dare use the words we taught her to tell the customers. Well, Asians! We were really shy too.
It was friday already, I couldn't remember what we did but I knew we all had our projects all completed already as scheduled. All I could remember was that we played games with them, something like the English Evening.. Yes! the English evening. It was really interesting. Denise came out with the idea of playing pictionary with them. So they spent like sometime to type the words out on papers and they were supposed to draw on the blackboard of how they can best describe the object without writing the word out. It was fun and everyone had a great time, because they all made it their game by drawing something out and asking the next person to guess. Without Helping Words. Oh ya in the morning we had Sport's day, ok to be short we were thrashed 6-2 in a soccer game. Haha. And I still remember Mr. Chong came out with sing-a-long with them by singing one of the very old song titled Top Of the world. He loved it. Don't know why he somehow likes to sing so much. So much to the extent that every morning about 6am, we can see Mr. Chong, KC and Priscilla, and sometimes Matthew, singing in the wee hours of the morning. But I can really admire them for being able to wake up so early. Because the weather there was so cold, to the extent that we all can sleep till 8+ in the morning.. LoL. Oh ya, did I mention that we had Dong Fen or Noodles for breakfast every single day? except for one day that we had delicious bread!
Soon it was Saturday, they had graduation day cum teacher's day. That day was exceptionally fun and busy at the same time. We all wanted to wake up at 5+ to cook breakfast for the school, but in the end I sort of woke up late at around 6 by the time I went over to the school's big kitchen, they were all done and ready. So I sort of went over to the hydroponics pluck weeds and sweep them. along with the sick Wai Kit who was blasting his way through with his nose and Mr. Calvin wong, the "Mr. My Guy" thing. One thing to mention was that we went over to their graduation and they played this really nice tune Vietnamese song.. after 5 minutes we realised that it's actually their school song. After that, we had a game of tug of war.. that was glorious.. the guys of Singapore won the guys of Vietnam hands down ! We didn't know why and we were all very surprised because they were all stronger than us in anyway, but we managed to win! Glorious ol' Singapura. The gals lost though. The mixed team won! At night, we had campfire. It was really fun, we all had bamboo pole dancing.. whereby we have to hop over bamboos that snap at each other according to a certain rhythm. and then we had the "as we walk to the left" song.. where they were so shy that they didn't dare dance. well, after that song mischevious vietnamese people went to blast techno! then the whole place suddenly turned into a dancefloor. But on the whole, it was a really interesting and unique campfire I've ever been. We even played their campfire games!
Sunday came, school was closed. so we were out the whole day visiting the Hanoi Water Puppet Theatre, and then back to the Minh Anh to eat again. It was all Minh Anh at Hanoi. Then as usual, we went around visiting places. Oh ya, the traffic at Vietnam is chaotic! Their traffic lights are useless, pedestrian crossings are for decorations and traffic police are corrupted! After that, we went back to school. Had our last dinner at Hoa Sua School. It was quite emotional. That night, not many slept late. But I was one that slept late. I went over to the bunks of the hearing impaired.. and communicated with them. They were a bunch of very very nice and friendly people. I simply love them. Well, had much of a chat down there and exchanged contacts. After that I went up, and chatted with Thu, Hong and Ngân. We had a long, long chat. We were telling them how Singapore is different from Vietnam.. and that how much we are going to miss them when we leave, and that they were asking us if we will be coming back to Vietnam the next time. Well, I thought for a while, and felt I gave quite a good answer to them. I told them that we are coming to Vietnam because the school has brought us here. And that we will not be coming back to Vietnam again, unless when we all grow older and come back as tourists on our own. It was really sad to have this conversation. I remembered I gave a necklace to Ngân. She wore it the very next moment. I was really touched then. After a heart-renching talk with them, we called it a night. After packing our lugguages, everyone went to bed. That night, I tossed and turned like how I was on the eve of the trip. I was thinking how will tomorrow be like. But soon I fell asleep. Our bunk made it a point to wake up early the next morning, and join them for morning exercise.
Monday came, I woke up feeling not so good. I felt that if I were to leave the place I would really tear. I told myself that. After I had my brush of teeth, We went down to have a stroll. We saw Ngân. She treated us a bread. I think it's a sweet corn bread. It was the best I've tasted all my life. Then I went around saying goodbye to the people at pastry, asian cooking and so on.. we went on walking around the school to have our last look.. it was very sad. Had our last look on Hoa Sua School, its Hydroponic plant.. and the people there. Then we went over to the School of embroideries and sewing to bid our last goodbyes.. then we went back to have a short tea party.. a farewell party. Then I saw Ngân crying. Then I teared inside. Well, I told myself not to break down so soon. So I served fruits to the people there. I served cookies to the people there. Walked around, try to show no sign of crying. I tried to hide my feelings but I failed. As 10.30am approached, We took many many pictures.. of the whole of Hoa Sua. Some weren't there, but most were. Then I cried, uncontrollably. I think many of my friends saw me crying. I saw Wee crying when I was crying.. then I started to see more people crying.. I hushed the crying vietnamese while crying. I kept saying "don't cry" when I was in fact doing that cry. Then Fub held onto me, as we walked to the bus.. he started to lie on my shoulder.. I thought he was just trying to show that he missed us. But well, soon after, I saw him crying as well. Every vietnamese there were crying.. I took out my tissue and dried Ngân's and Fub's tears, Ngân and Fub dried mine too. Then I went up the bus. But before I do, I gave each a packet of cookie which I bought it from Hoa Sua. I told them to keep it. Soon, everyone's luggage was packed into the bus. Then we all waved our last goodbyes, but as I waved I told myself that "hey, this could be the last time you'd be seeing them". But I couldn't help but leave. Then after, the bus left and our RnR started.

The Hoa Sua
Well, it was meaningful, it was fun, it was great, it was emotional, it was a sad part. I don't know why but it seems that I'm still not ready for Singapore.
